(From Chapter One: Basic Concepts):
Who has not looked up at night and admired the silver Moon caught in a tapestry of stars! Tonight, after the Sun has set and the Moon has risen high enough to become bright, go out and marvel at the celestial drama. Take a child or two along to share the experience. Here and there among the stars you might catch sight of Mercury's tiny spark, the radiance of Venus, the reddish fire of Mars, the splendid light of Jupiter, or the glimmer of far·off Saturn. Observe the sky at different times of the year and at different hours of the night, and you will soon learn to Recognize the planets as they trace their paths on the sky's darkened tableau. Eventually each planet's course ventures into the daytime reaches of the Sun,whose brilliance obscures it from our view. Though we cannot see the planets at such times, we know exactly where they are and when we can expect them to once again emerge as starlight companions of the Moon.
In astrology the sky is our celestial blackboard, a panoramic map of the heavens as it is seen from the earth and on which we follow the cycles of the Sun, Moon, and planets. The paths of the planets are circular, so our map is also a circle, as shown in Figure II. Every circle has 360 degrees, so each of the twelve signs contains thirty degrees. It is important to note that, for the sake of convenience, when astrologers refer to the "planets" and their movements through the zodiac, they include the Sun and Moon.
The meanings of the planets and the signs are basic concepts in learning to interpret natal charts and they are equally important in making predictions. We all want to know what kind of circumstances lie ahead. Will it be a favorable atmosphere in which much can be accomplished or an environment in which ill-timed acts can lead to disaster! To know this, we have to understand the nature of the signs....
