From Chapter One: In the Beginning— Elements, Qualities, Planets, Signs, and Houses

In the beginning, there was the Earth and the sky, Mother and Father, representing the elements earth and air. There was also water, since much of the Earth's surface was covered by water. Fire was the last of the elements, as fire was made by humans (or as some accounts tell us, a gift from the gods to humans) to represent their spiritual and creative force.

Understanding the balance of elements in our individual horoscopes is important; equipped with this knowledge, we can compensate for any imbalances in our individual energy system.

How do we determine this element balance! Older systems of astrology looked to the signs and counted the planets in each sign; they also considered the nodes of the Moon, the Ascendant, and the Midheaven. They spent some time on the houses by element and angular planets. Since the modem discoveries of the asteroids and Chiron and their effect on us, a more complete system is to include Chiron, the planetoid between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, and the four major asteroids: Ceres, Vesta, Pallas, and Juno. After considering these along with the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Midheaven, planets, and nodes, it is necessary to look at the planets in terms of the houses in which they fall— fire, earth, air, or water. A predominance in one of the houses or several of the houses of the same element adds a lot of weight to the sign placement.

Next, we consider the planets. Are there any angular planets! (Angular planets are those within five degrees of the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC.) Sometimes a person may have little fire in his or her horoscope, but Mars near an angle may make him or her very fiery, or Saturn near an angle would give a strong earth emphasis. For further planetary strength, are any planets conjunct the Sun or Moon! Look to the ruling planet or the planet receiving the most aspects; these factors add extra weight in one's analysis. The outer planets stay in a sign for many years, so the sign placement of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto would not count for much, whereas the house placement would.

Here is how the signs, houses, and planets break down by element:

Fire: the signs Aries, Lee, and Sagittarius; the first, fifth, and ninth houses; and Mars, the Sun, and Jupiter; also the planetoid Chiron (the wounded healer with his bow and arrow), which is often associated with Sagittarius.

Earth: the signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn; the second, sixth, and tenth houses; the planet Saturn; and the asteroids Ceres (the Earth Mother and goddess of grain) and Vesta (the vestal virgin and goddess of the hearth). Both of these asteroids represent aspects of Virgo--Ceres, the nurturing Earth energy, and Vesta, the devotion and purity.

Air: the signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius; the third, seventh, and eleventh houses; the planets Mercury and Uranus; and the asteroid Pallas. (Pallas Athena is known for her wisdom and mental creativity and is associated with Libra.)

Water: the signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces; the fourth, eighth, and twelfth houses; and the Moon, Neptune, Pluto, and Venus. (Some say Venus is earth and others air because of its dual rulership of Taurus and Libra, and yet Venus has a strongly emotional and aesthetic quality. Aphrodite or Venus rose from the water at birth. Venus probably is a combination of all three elements.) Also, the asteroid June, the goddess of marriage traditionally associated with Libra, has come to have a self-sacrificing aspect and an association with Pisces as she was deceived by Zeus many times.

Let's examine the elements in terms of their balance, excess and lack, and see what we can do to work on the extremes of any element....
